In addition to standard DHL Express compensation for damage, monetary compensation for any physical loss or damage and for external risk factors will be insured. (NOTE: Insurance is not available for documents.)
1. Transport Insurance
Insurance may be arranged for all shipments transported by DHL Express.
In the event of loss or damage, there is a ceiling to the amount of monetary compensation under our carriage terms and conditions. Therefore, when the value of the shipment exceeds our ceiling for monetary compensation, you will be eligible to receive compensation above and beyond the aforementioned ceiling by applying insurance to the shipment (loss of or damage to the contents of the shipment, but in some cases limits or exceptions may apply).
2. Period of Validity for Transport Insurance
Insurance shall be valid from the point DHL, or an agent under collection and delivery contract with DHL, collects the shipment, or the customer carries the shipment to a DHL facility for shipment and hands it over to DHL staff, until delivery is completed to the destination noted on the waybill. (During import customs clearance in the destination country, if the shipment is handed to a specified customs official as directed by the receiver, insurance is not applicable beyond that point as the transport insurance period of validity ends at the point the shipment is transferred.)
3. Limits and Exceptions to Insurance Coverage
The customer may insure shipments bound for any country or area serviced by DHL; however, in the case of pay-on-delivery shipments to certain countries and areas, shipments may not be insured. Additionally, in certain cases, temporary limits and exceptions may apply with regard to, but not limited to, political action, terrorist acts, risks of exposure to radioactivity, riot and/or civil commotion or official government declarations.
Additionally, DHL is not liable for damages caused by the following:
- Delays
- Damage caused by government or customs factors
- Damage caused by exposure to radioactivity
- Damage caused by riot and/or civil commotion
- Damage caused by acts, negligence or failure to act on the part of the shipper, receiver or its representative
Damage caused by delay in delivery:
- Damage caused by failure to meet appointed date or time of delivery

Damages due to reasons other than contingency:

- Dissimilarity in ordered shipment and arriving shipment
- Damage caused by willful misconduct
Damage caused by inherent defects in or properties of the shipment:
- Decomposition or deterioration in quality caused by changes in temperature
- Moisture, fungus, rust, etc. caused by condensation resulting from changes in temperature
Damage caused by improper packaging:
- Damage in transit due to failure to use sufficient packaging materials
- Damage or defacement caused by lack of packaging or insufficient packaging
Damage only to packaging:
- Damage to external packaging such as wooden crates and cardboard boxes
- (As packing is a tool necessary for carriage, it is not covered by insurance)
Indirect damage:
- Rejection or damages for breach of contract arising due to damage incurred during carriage
- Lost earnings arising due to difficulty in production process
Additionally, items not handled by DHL, as well as information or software recorded on recording media including but not limited to paper, CD-Rs, tapes and DVDs, are not covered by insurance.
4. Amount Subject to Payment
Insurance covers the transport fees (including fuel surcharge and service charges for remote locations) and the total cash value of all items listed on the invoice. Insuring only a portion of the items is not permitted.
The amount of compensation from insurance shall not exceed the amount declared by the customer on the invoice, and costs for purchasing replacements for lost or damaged contents, or actual costs to be paid for repair, it shall be the lower of the two costs. Additionally, any transport fees to be compensated from insurance shall be calculated and payment completed based upon the proportion of lost or damaged contents.
5. Insurance Premium
In the case where the sender pays for shipment at shipping:
The higher of 1.2% of the declared value or 2,500 yen
In the case of pay-on-delivery shipment of an import or export (the insurance premium would also be paid at the time of arrival and the person insured would be the same as the person who paid the insurance premium)
Declared value x 1%; however, minimum insurance premium: 10 euros or the equivalent.
6. Claiming Insurance
If in any case loss or damage occurs to the cargo and a customer claims insurance, he/she must contact the nearest DHL office within 30 days of the date the delivery was actually completed, or the date calculated from the standard number of days required for delivery.
